SCHEDULE IT FOR PLAYOUT
Q: What is DVUS-1?
A: It’s a software application which converts a regular PC into a video server that “plays out” video according to your schedule.
Q: What other hardware is required?
A: In addition to the computer it requires one the following MPEG2 video decoder cards.
Visual Circuits Harmony cards are two or four channels with analog outputs (Composite, Y/C and Component). Harmony accepts 4:2:0 MPEG2 files up to 15Mbs
Stradis cards are single channel with SDI and analog outputs depending on the model. Stradis accepts 4:2:2 MPEG2 files up to 50Mbs.
Q: How do you make an 8 channel server?
A: Use 2 or more Harmony Cards and let us work with you on the PC configuration.
Q: What’s the difference between 4:2:2 AND 4:2:0?
A: The difference is the color samples in each digitized video signal.
Each of these numbers represents a factor which multiplies the color subcarrier frequency to obtain a sampler frequency for the digitizing process. The first number (=4) is the sampler for luminance (Y), the other two are for both color components (U and V). Then, in a 4:2:2 digitized video data we have 4 samples of Y for each 4 samples of chroma (or 2 samples of each chroma component).
In the case of 4:2:0, we have 4 samples of Y for each 2 of chroma. As there are equations relating these 3 numbers, the zero doesn’t mean that one of the components is not sampled at all. Using this method we get the samples are reduced in a way that the final image still looks very good as it takes advantage of some human eyes properties.
Q: How many SERVER versions are available?
A: A Complete Version and a Basic version.
Q: Please explain the modules
A:
Server: The main module that also controls the video card and the database. It works on Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
Capture: For video clip capture. It can be installed on the local or a remote computer.
Play: Controls the playout of each channel. It can be installed on the local or a remote computer.
Reel Manager: For assembling Play lists (Reels). Also metadata for the clips can be loaded here.
Reporter: Generates playout reports, and has backup tools.
Web Server: Optional module allows remote (intranet and internet) insertion of video clips using a web browser. Clips can be inserted from any OS based computer.
CLIP INSERTION
Q: What modules do we need to insert clips to the server?
A: In addition to the Server module you need the Capture module or the Web Server module.
Q: What can I do with the Web Server Module?
A: The Web Server Module allows you to list available clips and to insert clips.
Q: Can I insert clips from a remote internet machine?
A: Yes, the DVUS-1 Web Server allows this option as it is.Security measures like a firewall installation should be taken.
Q: Can I insert clips from a Mac G5?
A: Yes, the DVUS-1 Web Server allows this option as it is. The only point to take care is that DVUS-1 accepts muxed MPEG2 files and applications like Final Cut Pro needs a plugin from Main Concepts to do this exportation. In the case you don’t want to purchase this plugin, a small script application is free available from our website.
REPORTER
Q: What can the Reporter do?
A: main function: 1) it creates reports of scheduled and played clips, and 2) it allows to make backups of the selected video clips and the whole database if needed.
OPERATIONAL QUESTIONS
Q: Can we import clips from NLE systems?
A: DVUS-1 is compatible with almost any NLE which can export either a DV file or MPEG2 file. The Web Server Module allows this level of compatibility as the only remote application needed for the insertion is a web browser like IE, Netscape, etc.
To import from Final Cut Pro, once the edit is done, you need to create an MPEG2 file. FCP includes the Compressor module, which can create this MPEG2 file at desired bit rate, but this file is actually separated in two files (video + audio) and you need to multiplex both files to finally generate a common .mpg file. If you don’t know how to do it, you can download from our website a free script which automate this process.
Another option using FCP is to purchase a plugin which will create the .mpg file in only one step from the timeline. Among others, Main Concept offers this type of plugin.
To import from Adobe Premiere, once the edit is done, you only need to export a MPEG2 file from the timeline. Premiere already includes a function to encode to MPEG2 at the desired bit rate. Another option we recommend, is to install the Cinema Craft plugin for Premiere which delivers excellent quality at low bit rates.
To import from Avid, once the edit is done, you only need to export a MPEG2 file from the timeline. Most Avid editing applications already includes a function to encode to MPEG2 at the desired bit rate for DVD authoring purposes and our decoders are 100% compatible with the .mpg DVD file format.
In general, as a rule, if the MPEG2 file (.mpg) is already muxed (multiplexed), and it can be directly used for DVD authoring, it will be compatible with DVUS-1.
Another option to import clips into DVUS-1 is to export a DV file from any of these NLE systems and then use the Capture module to encode to MPEG2 (.mpg file).
Q: How many capture stations can insert clips to one server?
A: For an inexpensive installation using a 100Mbs switch and two 7200rpm regular SATA drives for the video storage, a layout of up to 6 capture workstations works very well.
Note: When using either the Web Server or remote Capture modules, the transfer speed will be affected by available network band with and video storage performance.
Q: How many remote workstations can be working on the schedule at the same time?
A: In theory there is no limit but that is related to the user’s operation.
Q:MUST YOU BUY LICENSES OR SOFTWARE FOR EACH STATION?
A: If you have the Web Server module you need no additional licenses unless you want the additional features offered by having a second copy of the capture module (deck control, etc).
Q: How many modes does Play module have?
A: Play module modes of operation can be classified in: Manual, Semi Automatic and fully Automatic, depending on the load and playback options selected. DVUS-1 has GPI I/O for general interface with other video equipment. Also, there are three special playback modes: Regular, Loop and News.
Q: What kind of support is provided?
A: Web, email and phone support.
Q: How many software updates per year?
A: Usually there are at least 3~4 updates per year. Updates are free, with very few exceptions.
Q: Can I browse the video clips database?
A: Yes, this can be done using the Web Server and the Capture module.
APPLICATION EXAMPLES:
The DVUS-1 was originally born for commercial insertion, but very quickly it became a general purposes video server, and the whole application was modified and upgraded so the DVUS-1 server can be a right solution for many other needs, like clips playback for live News, playback needs in a TV studio, continuous loop playback for shopping malls, banks, hospitals, closed circuit, ad agencies, etc.
TECHNICAL QUESTIONS
Q: What kind of video files are used in DVUS-1?
A: DVUS-1 is based on the most popular video codecs: it stores video files in MPEG2 format which is very efficient in terms of quality versus bitrate. For capture it saves a temporal DV codec based file and after trimming the files are encoded to MPEG2. DV and MPEG2 files from 3rd party applications can be imported.
Q: Is there any suggested configuration?
A: DVUS-1 has an open architecture and many different possible configurations. The right configuration will depend on the users needs. For a minimum configuration we suggest: PC P4 1.7+, 512MB, OS drive, SATA HD for Video, Firewire I/O (for capture), Video Out Decoder Card, DVD-ROM, …
Q: Is there any type of redundancy available?
A: We suggest a redundant power supply PC and a redundant RAID 1/3/5 disk array. Mirror imaging server redundancy not available yet.
Q: Can the clock of the DVUS-1 be in sync with the Master Clock of the TV Station?
A: There are many Master Clock manufacturers which sell this kind of equipment with a serial / USB connection so both clocks (PC/network and TV Station) are in sync.
